Gavin Pritchard OBE
A former principal inspector at the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) Gavin was either the investigator-in-charge or supervisor of over 40 serious marine casualties. These investigations encompassed all marine industry sectors including yacht and ferry groundings, collisions, fishing accidents and industrial fatalities. Gavin was closely involved in training newly recruited inspectors and was closely involved in the delivery of investigation training to staff from Red Ensign Group registries.
Prior to his accident investigation career, Gavin spent 30 years as a warfare officer in the Royal Navy, including command of four warships. He is a guest lecturer in accident investigation at Cranfield University, an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute, a Liveryman of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, a Younger Brother of Trinity House and was awarded an OBE in 2009.
Tony Brown MBE
Following 20 years in the Royal Navy, Tony spent the next 20 years with the MAIB. During that period, he investigated or managed over 100 marine casualties of various types, all ending in published reports. Among these were the structural failure of the container ship Napoli, and the fire on board the cruise ship Star Princess, both of which led to changes in international standards and regulation.
Since retiring from the MAIB in 2021, Tony has delivered marine accident training courses to national accident investigation authorities, and to large shipping companies. He has also assisted in the development of an online marine accident training course through the World Maritime University for use by the EU and has maintained currency by conducting three investigations for different flag States.
